About Made In The Bay Area

When we think of something “made” we tend to think of a raw good converted into a finish product. While this is true and something Made in the Bay Area promotes, our first priority is to help “make people” here in the Bay Area.

Familyhood’s vision of “making people” is to produce Alumni in all schools. Alumni are graduates who return to mentor the school’s Student Government Association.

Made In The Bay Area is a partner of the community development strategy known as Familyhood.
Familyhood defines schools as the center of the community’s development.
Familyhood is driven by two motto’s.

1) Every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.

2) Every school shall have a garden, a farmers’ market and a grocery store.

In short, Familyhood is the school’s Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association in collaboration.

Familyhood recommends local businesses to become “friends of the schools” by offering jobs, internships, training, funding, technical assistance, etc, in support of schools in their community growing Familyhood.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do schools get started?

The “do now” strategy to advance schools / communities towards Familyhood is 1st Saturdays. 1st Saturdays represents the 1st Saturday of every month as the official monthly volunteer day in the schools.

1st Saturdays is also a monthly reminder to pursue Familyhood’s two motto’s mentioned above.

Made in The Bay Area.com is the hub site of the Familyhood development in the Bay Area. In addition to mapping the 1st Saturdays volunteer day in Oakland, Oakland companies can list their business as potential “friends of the school” in their community.

Why is Familyhood a community development strategy?

According to Familyhood. The more Alumni the community produces, the more developed the community will become. Alumni are graduates who return to volunteer/mentor the school’s Student Government Association.

The main goal of Familyhood is to create a pipeline between the Student Government Association and the Alumni Association that enables schools to not just serve their students for four years, but rather for their entire life (four years as a student and the rest of their life as members of the Alumni Association).

Our “means of production ” are Alumni. “The more Alumni a community produces, the more developed a community will become.”
